Pyrford CC

Welcome to 2009

Pyrford Cricket Club has the ambition and resources to reach the top of league cricket in Surrey and to be a major force in the various National competitions available to cricket clubs in the UK.

We have an approach that is based on drawing the majority of players from a broad amateur club membership but supplementing their playing strength with up to three professional cricketers in the 1st XI and ECB qualified coaches available to all senior and junior sides. This leads to a well-balanced club that has the happy spirit of willing volunteers and the cutting edge of professional sportsman.

Senior Section - As a club we have enjoyed an unbelievable run of success with 10 promotions in the last 10 years, including 6 League Championships. 2008 saw our best season yet with all three Saturday league sides claiming promotion in their respective divisions. Pyrford also boasted the leading league run scorer, Sys Meyer, and the leading wicket taker, Brayden Teece, in the entire Surrey Championship.

2009 will see all three teams playing in the 1st Division of the Surrey Championship, Surrey's highest amateur league. We will also compete in a number of midweek cup games centred on the Flora Doris Cup and Championship 20:20.

Senior side winter nets at Surrey Cricket School - Guildford, run on a Wednesday evenings at 9pm from 28th January. Outside nets will run at the Club from Wednesday 15th April onwards.

We will also be investing further in our Development side. This side will continue to play on Sundays and provide an avenue for our brightest and best colts to play senior style cricket, before moving into the Saturday sides.

Colts Section - The success we have enjoyed in the senior side of our cricket has brought additional benefits to our thriving Colts section. Over 120 colts of ages 7-15 groups are regularly attending Sunday morning coaching sessions or teams from U9’s and above are competing in matches in the West Surrey Youth League.

We have had a strong tradition of quality coaching for the coaches with Gareth Hopkins, New Zealand and more recently our head coach was Tatender Taibu, the Zimbabwean test player and captain. Last season was no different and saw the Colts benefiting from having the league’s leading run making and wicket taker, with coaching under Sys and Brayden’s expert tutelage.

PCC colts achieved some notable successes in 2008:
# Our under 9’s won their league and were runners up in the regional final.
# Our Under 11’s squad formed the majority of Pyrford School’s success to be Surrey “Kwik – Cricket” champions, Southern England semi-finalists and winners of the Woking schools District hardball competition.

This year we have age groups at U9, U10, U12, U13 & U15. There is no U16’s league because of GCSE examinations. It is hoped those senior colts will continue cricket with the development side as they play there way into the senior side’s and are the club’s next generation players.

We also offer a ‘minis’ section for those boys and girls in school years 1 and 2 and introduce them in a fun environment to this fantastic sport.

For more details please contact the Colts Manager – Derek Cockle - pyrfordcolts@aim.com

Having celebrated out 150th Anniversary Year last year, we hope our success on the field can continue to be replicated off the field. As ever we have a full social calendar planned for 2009, details of which can be found in the Club’s fixture card or can be seen on the Club's Calendar (in "Community" section of the website)

The club will again be looking to improve it facilities both in terms of investing in the square and outfield, together with building on last year’s major refurbishment programme of the pavilion.

The large club house facilities including a full staffed bar can be hired at very competitive rates. For further details please contact the Club Secretary - Stephen Cowburn – sjcowburn@yahoo.co.uk

Success on the field has been only part of the story. The camaraderie and enjoyment of the growing club membership is exceptional and new members will be amazed how quickly they fit in and embrace the spirit of Pyrford Cricket Club.

Whether you are a proven player with experience at a high level, a bona fide novice who just wants to play the game or a parent with a son or daughter interested in playing cricket for the first time, Pyrford CC will make you welcome. We have cricket available to all at a variety of standards. Although we can't guarantee you runs and wickets, we can guarantee you will have fun.

So if you are interested in joining Surrey’s most up and coming cricket club, in any capacity, want to hire the facilities or just find out a little more please contact the club Secretary - Stephen Cowburn – sjcowburn@yahoo.co.uk

Whatever aspect of this great game you are interested in you will be made very welcome.

Ian Lipscombe – Chairman
